weird first period after baby??

OK, Rowan is 9 months old and I just had my first period since he was born, it started almost 2 WEEKS ago!

a little hx: I have a Mirena IUD. I had one before I started TTC, following 5 yrs of depo. When I had the mirena put in, I still didn't have a period for 18 months, then I had maybe 2 that were very light about about 4 days long and then it stopped again. That can happen with Mirena. They returned to normal once I had it removed and started TTC.

I had a new Mirena put in when Rowan was 8 weeks and I've been breastfeeding. He is breastfeeding less and less and my production has decreased a lot as well.

So, this period started, but doesn't seems to be stopping. First it was light spotting mostly, but now in the last day or so it has actually gotten heavier. The other odd thing is, I'm having cramps, but they feel different that they used to, and they are the strongest whenever I pee! I don't THINK I have a UTI, but it feels like, when I relax those muscles, I have strong/sharp pelvic cramps.

So, if this keeps going a couple more days I think I'll have to see my GYN. Yay, take even more time off work, along with the dental appointment I have to go to tomorrow because I appear to have lost a filling!

So the question is: first period post baby....did you notice things were different than before? Was it longer/shoer or lighter/heavier???

I had my first period after matthew at 6 weeks pp.  And it was heavy but not any different than before.  I have a Mirena IUD now and I don't have any periods.  I wonder if your IUD is trying to expell or something since you said you're having a lot of cramps when you pee.  I think I would call the ob and ask.

I had a Mirena for four years. After a couple months with it, I never had another period until after it was removed.

I wonder if yours is in the wrong place or poking your uterus or something.

Hope things get better for you.

I usually have heavy periods after my babies (even with my c-section).  They last about the same amount of time but are super heavy the 2,3,4 day.  I am just putting this out there for what it's worth..I HATE my Mirena IUD...I cant wait to get this sucker out.  I have been bleeding non stop since the very beginning of January when they put it in (I think I have had may be 10 or less days of no bleeding)...I know before anyone tells me that can happen...but the other symptoms just don't make this a desire BC method now- my body is not happy with this thing.  I hope your body regulates...I cant even really tell when I have my period cause all I do is bleed.  Oh- and my GYN tells me this is normal, when I checked at the 4-6 weeks after placement appointment- so I wouldn't waste time at the Dr's office without maybe quick chat with the nurse.  Good luck, I hope you have more success then I have with the IUD.
Edit: I have had horrible cramps on and off and unusual sharp pains...it feels like a cyst (maybe?) I was never one to really have cramps either...and I have had issues feeling like my bladder is empty (gone to check for UTI- neg).  Google your symptoms and mirena..you'll be shocked...or at least I was.

I loved mine, no trouble at all with it for 5 years, certainly not 2 weeks long periods, that's why this is so weird to me. And it's been in there for 7 months now, so it seems odd that I would start having trouble now.

I had an IUD put in when Mallory was 8 weeks.   I got my first period as soon as I stopped breastfeeding- about when whe was 14 weeks.   My period lasted for 4 weeks!  Then spotting on and off.   My OB said it was completely normal.

Good to know, I do suspect this has to do with the decreased breastfeeding!

I don't have an IUD, but my first period after Matty was born was a nightmare! It lasted almost three weeks, I would start to think it was over b/c I was down to just spotting and BAM it would start up full force again. After the first one I got back to normal, but that first one was a doozy.
